FTP Procedures for the PC

  1. Open your FTP program. Click the NEW button to create a new Session.
    Type in a name for this session. This is a name for you, so you will know this is the web FTP Session.
    Example: FTP to Web server

  2. Enter the Host Name.
    To enter, type the name of the server you want to connect to.

  3. Enter your User ID.
    To enter, type your User ID in the Session Properties window.

  4. Enter your Password.
    To enter, type your Password in the Session Properties window.
    Note: This is case sensitive and you will not see what you are entering. Please make sure Caps Lock is not pressed and enter the characters carefully.
    Click on OK to connect.

  5. The FTP window will appear.
    This window is divided in two sections. On the left side is your PC (local system) and its directories. On the right side is the server (remote system) and its directories.

  6. Locate the directory where your file will be placed.
    To locate the directory, either
    1. navigate through the directories on the Remote System (right section), or

    2. click once on the Remote System (right section) CHGDIR button.

      A diologue box will appear. Enter the path to the destination directory. Click OK.

  7. Locate and select your file to transfer.
    To locate and select your file, choose either method below:
    1. Navigate through the directories on the Local System (left section) of the FTP window. Select the file to transfer by clicking once on the file name.

    2. Click once on the Local System (left section) CHGDIR button.

      A dialog box will appear. Type the path to your file. Click OK.

  8. Choose the appropriate format for your files.
    To choose, click once on the
    1. ASCII radio button for text files

    2. Binary radio button for graphics files.

  9. Transfer your files to the remoe system.
    Note: Two arrows are located in the middleof the FTP window. These arrows are used to transfer files between the local system (left section) and remote system (right section).
    To transfer your files to the remote system, click once on the lower arrow (pointing to the remote system).

    A dialog box will appear indicating the transfer status of your files.

    To indicate a successful transfer,the filename will be displayed on the remote system (right section) of the FTP window and the messages "Transfer Succeeded" and "Transfer Complete" will be displayed.

  10. End the FTP Session.
    To end, Click once on the close button in the lower left hand side of the screen.
